Very early in the post game press conference tonight, manager Terry Collins gave credit to the "mentality of the clubhouse" and that if the Mets were down in a situation like that a year as they were tonight against Miami multiple times, they don't win. I 100% agree with this statement.
I'm not sure if it's due to the signing of Kevin Long as hitting coach, Matt Harvey's return to the team after Tommy John Surgery, or just the unit in the clubhouse gelling as personalities, but this 2015 club is playing with confidence and grit. As Good News Hughes texted me tonight, "The Mets are scrappy." There's no other way to put it.
Also, I think the Mets have finally found a way to play in Citi Field. The "small ball philosophy" is perfect for the ballpark. Hearing Keith Hernandez on SNY gushing over the style of baseball "he played and grew up in" after the era of the home run makes me smile. He knows the deal.
Can we give props to Carlos Torres? A converted starter, Torres has been lights out in his set up man role right now. Getting out of a jam after a Giancarlo Stanton double, Torres struck out two batters. He is doing what is needed to be done, especially being thrust into the role after Jennry Mejia and his idiocracy.
More and more everyday, I keep eating just a little more crow about Michael Cuddyer. His veteran leadership is unwavering and his bat has been so far, so good. Sometimes, you just get nervous as a guy who's 35 and getting $10 million a year after an injury riddled 2014. Cuddyer is playing well. I'm happy to have him here.
Now...the play. Ichiro was out. Travis d'Arnaud had to handle a bad throw to home plate from Daniel Murphy at 2nd. Mr. Suzuki, expecting a rundown after a triple, stopped. Both men dived in for the plate. From my vantage point, I legit felt that d'Arnaud got him no problem. Plus, Ichiro did not touch the plate EITHER time he reached for it. The home plate umpire originally called Suzuki out. However...
After a 5 minute delay, they OVERTURNED the call. OVERTURNED? Oh man, I was furious. However, my chief TV replay advisor, my girlfriend Haley, said the following via mobile messaging regarding the entire issue:
Regardless, it was a good night. Mets win and, at least for a night, is in sole possession of 1st place. I'm happy to see this transpire for the fan base. It's well needed.
Tomorrow, El Porko Day. Can't wait.
